          QUIROS

What began in this body of work, as an intellectual reading of the story of red, became an emotional response to place - The Great Southern Land.

Spaniard and last conquistador Quiros' failed quest to discover and navigate the southern continent as told through the music of Australian composer Peter Sculthorpe and poem series by Australian James McAuley, broached the distance for me between artist and narrative:

"I saw the South Land, vast, worn down,

   and strange"

Red captures visionary passion, desire, active quest and red earth. This series is as much the narrative of a faded conquistador as it is the beginning of my narrative of place with Australia.
